Après le forgeage, les billettes en acier inoxydable sont chauffées à 900-1 100 °C (au-dessus de la recristallisation) et refroidies à l'air (normalisation) ou au four (recuit) pour affiner le grain, ramollir le matériau et éliminer les contraintes résiduelles. Les nuances austénitiques sont trempées à l'eau ; les qualités duplex reçoivent un refroidissement rapide à l'air pour éviter la phase σ.
